Pilot BitsTHE GROUND PICKS THE TOOTH.
Teeth and pilot bits are consumables: a worn edge slows penetration, loads the drive head and pushes wear back onto the holder. Match the edge to what you drill and change it before it changes the auger.
FORGED, CARBIDE TIPPED OR CHIP WELDED.
Eight teeth cover the holders in the field. Forged steel for dirt; carbide inserts (ATC) for rock and frost; a chip-welded edge (CW) when the soil eats plain steel.
THE PILOT STARTS THE HOLE.
The pilot bit sits at the point of the auger. It centres the hole, breaks the crust and pulls the flighting in; the teeth behind it do the cutting. Two fits: a square neck that drops into the socket at the auger point and pins through, and a threaded shank that screws into the point.
Same three edges as the teeth — plain steel, carbide tip, chip-welded — so a rock pilot (B1C, B3C) goes with carbide teeth and a dirt pilot with forged ones.
COUPLERS, HUBS AND SHANK PLATES.
Precision steel castings between the drive and the flighting: the upper coupler that takes the drive output, the lower cap that closes the tube and carries the pilot socket. Cast, not fabricated, so the bores stay round under torque.
